Microsoft HoloLens

Diagram Design | Storyboarding | Illustration

Within the Microsoft HoloLens team, I worked as a Senior Visual Designer on a creative team under the Advanced Optics and Systems group. This organization was primarily made up of optical engineers who were responsible for delivering key technologies for the HoloLens mixed reality headsets. My role was to bridge the communication gap between technical experts and business stakeholders through clear visual design, diagram design, and storyboarding for video demonstrations.

HoloLens 2 Launch Party Branding

To celebrate the much-anticipated second generation product launch of the HoloLens mixed reality headset, I was tasked with creating a visual system and series of marketing assets for a launch event. These included oversize banners, marketing posters, wayfinding posters, email marketing banners, and swag. Though these assets received final approval, the event was unfortunately indefinitely postponed due to the onset of Covid restrictions.

All-Hands Presentation Design

To introduce new leadership and revitalized business priorities, the Advanced Optics and Systems creative team led planning and marketing for an All-Hands event. As Senior Visual Designer, I art directed asset creation for the event, including a leadership photoshoot. I was responsible for photo editing, custom illustrations, and presentation design for the event as well.

Front-End Web Design
for Team Gift Site

As a thank you to the team’s engineers after a major stakeholder event, the Advanced Optics and Systems team organized a gift giveaway. I was tasked with designing a fun, travel-themed landing webpage that allowed employees to select their gift and enter delivery information.

Engineering Diagrams

One of my primary responsibilities on the Advanced Optics and Systems team was to create approachable and compelling diagrams. These diagrams created clarity for universal engineering processes and aided in product pitches to stakeholders. I worked closely closely with subject matter experts and work iteratively to strategically visualize very complex concepts as simply as possible.

V-diagrams are a graphical representation of a systems development lifecycle. It is used to produce rigorous development lifecycle models and project management models. I created several updated and visually appealing poster concepts for the HoloLens optical engineering workspace.

Anatomical planes are imaginary planes that divide the body into sections to describe the location of structures and the direction of movement. The Advanced Optics and Systems engineers' work consistently referenced these planes. I was tasked with creating quick guide diagrams of these planes both with reference to the HoloLens headset as well as the eye to aid in the efficiency of workflow communications between engineers and stakeholders.

Presentation Title Design

In addition to all-staff presentations, I was responsible for creating PowerPoint templates for regular-cadence business updates. I designed thematic title slide artwork for these presentation decks to elevate messaging and to provide clarity about which technology initiative the presentation was referring.

Advanced Optics Office Wall Art

During my time on the Advanced Optics and Systems team, a brand new workspace was unveiled. In an effort to elevate the space for both employees and special tour guests, I was tasked with creating custom artwork for the entrance hallway. My poster designs focused on the concept of “Back to the Basics” of optical engineering, including RGB light colorspace, lens focus, silicon material, electricity, depth perception, and more. These posters were ultimately printed on large metal sheets and created visual impact and an educational moment for visitors.

Advanced Optics Lab Hallway Mural

The Advanced Optics and Systems team workspaces were split between a traditional office area and a technology lab. Leading to the lab door was a long, empty hallway that the team wanted to fill with optical engineering-themed artwork. I pitched several design concepts that combined beautiful visuals with concrete technology references.

Concept 1: Light Travel Through Lenses

Graphical depiction of the path of a laser being reflected and refracted by lenses until it reaches the eye.

Concept 2: Mt. Rainier Holographic Landscape

Abstract representation of a holographic image being in-progress laser mapped.
